Penn State vs Mississippi State

The NIT 2018 semifinals game is set for Tuesday, March 27. Below, check out an NIT schedule, game times and TV channels for the semifinals.

Penn State then plays Mississippi State around 9 p.m. ET or a little after the end of the first game.

The NIT championship game will be at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 29.

Penn State is a proud school with plenty of athletic tradition. Fortunately for Mississippi State, the Nittany Lions have had much more success on the gridiron than on the hardwood. As a SEC fan I assumed that Penn State had a strong basketball tradition just because, well, they are Penn State. However, since the 2000-2001 season, Penn State only has three 20 win seasons. With one of those coming this year. This doesn’t exactly scream national power. Historically, Penn State has 9 Overall NCAA Appearances with their latest appearance in 2011. They made one Final Four way back in 1954. In terms of NIT success, the Lions actually won the whole tournament in 2009 beating Baylor in the final.

The Tipoff
Penn State overachieved this season. Most pundits had Penn State in the middle to bottom of the pack in the BIG 10 for their preseason predictions. Having all of their starters come back to this year’s team was huge.

But many people were skeptical because of a lack of depth and reliance on a trio of sophomores (Tony Carr, Lamar Stevens, Mike Watkins). The trio has delivered this season. Penn State’s season was highlighted by three wins over a ranked Ohio State team.

However, the success against the Buckeyes did not translate for the rest of the season. The Lions lost their other ranked match-ups but were in most of those ballgames late. Penn State got hot in the BIG 10 tournament, beating Northwestern and Ohio State before losing to Purdue in the Quarterfinals. In the NIT, Penn State has continued it’s hot play and beaten Temple, Notre Dame, and Marquette.read more:

The NIT 2018 semifinals game is set for Tuesday, March 27. Below, check out an NIT schedule, game times and TV channels for the semifinals.

Utah and Western Kentucky play in the first semifinal game.

2018 NIT: Schedule, game times for semifinals

The 2018 NIT schedule starts at 7 p.m. ET with Utah-Western Kentucky on Tuesday, March 27. Penn State then plays Mississippi State around 9 p.m., or a little after the end of the first game.

The NIT championship game will be at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 29.

NIT 2018: Although the men’s National Invitation Tournament has become overlooked with fans caring a lot more about the NCAA tournament, there is still plenty of value in the second-tier event.

Considered a consolation tournament by some, it’s also an excellent chance for some smaller programs to finally get a chance to move into the spotlight and show what they can do. Meanwhile, younger teams at big programs can use this opportunity to gain momentum heading into next year.

TCU won the NIT last season, and one year later the Horned Frogs are in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998.

This type of future success is far from guaranteed, but the 32 teams selected for the NIT are hoping to end their 2017-18 season on a high note.

The field is made up of the 32 best teams that failed to make the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

The 2018 tournament features experimental rules, including an extended 3-point line and widened lane area. The most notable experimental change will be that games are being played in four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves.

The NCAA Tournament has been full of surprises thus far, but two No. 1 seeds have actually made the Final Four, along with No. 3 seed Michigan. The biggest surprise, by far, is the No. 11 Loyola-Chicago Ramblers making it all the way to the final weekend. It should be an intriguing set of games, so make sure you know how to watch them.

No. 3 seed in West Regional
The Michigan Wolverines made NCAA Tournament life difficult on themselves early, winning their first two by rather uncomfortably close margins. But since, the Wolverines have flipped a switch and put their top-5 defense to the test, holding Texas A&M and Florida State to a combined 126 points en route to its first Final Four since 2013.

No. 11 seed in South Regional
Meet your Cinderella, folks. Loyola-Chicago, the No. 11 seed in the South Region, won its first three games by a combined four points in the NCAA Tournament before punching its Final Four ticket with a 78-62 victory over Kansas State. It’s the first time the Ramblers will be in the Final Four since 1963.

2018 Final Four: TV channels for NCAA Tournament games

The 2018 Final Four is going to be on TBS this year. Both of the national semifinal games and the national championship game will be televised on TBS.

Bleacherreport Article: The Final Four is set. In what has been an upset-filled, historic 2018 NCAA tournament, only a handful of people had the clairvoyance or were lucky enough to predict that Villanova, Kansas, Michigan and Loyola of Chicago would be the last squads standing in the 68-team bracket.

Millions of people took a stab at forecasting which teams would make it to San Antonio to fight for a national championship, but according to ESPN Stats & Info, only a minute fraction of those who filled out a bracket got it right:

The semifinal doubleheader will take place Saturday, with the final played Monday, April 2. Villanova will be looking to win another national title after cutting down the nets in 2016, while Kansas is in its 15th Final Four and hoping to win its first championship since 2008.

Michigan is in the Final Four for the first time since 2013, but it might be the most unpopular team left, if only because the Wolverines are playing the wonderful underdog that is Loyola-Chicago, which has rattled off a string of last-second wins and a crushing upset to become one of the best Cinderella stories in NCAA tournament history.

Here’s what you need to know to catch all the action.

If you trusted the selection committee, then at least one of the semifinal matchups made for easy pickings when the tournament began. No. 1 Villanova will take on No. 1 Kansas Saturday, ensuring a top-seeded team will reach the final.

Villanova advanced to the Final Four with a fairly straightforward 71-59 win over Texas Tech. Both teams shot just 33.3 percent from the field, but the Wildcats were excellent on the glass, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds to convert much-needed second-chance opportunities. Villanova’s depth also shone during the performance, with five players scoring in double figures, led by Jalen Brunson with 15 points.
